“Will you meet me halfway?”

“Of course.”

“See you soon.”

“Soon isn’t soon enough.”

After a hot and humid day under the sun, there had been enough moisture in the air to fuel the formation of a super cell.  The bow echo came in from the west, promising relief from the call of summer with a price.  It barrelled through sometime after night had fallen, when the city was lit by streetlamps swaying in the wind.  Pouring rain made everything slick and lightning shook the tallest buildings still under construction, but at least the air felt cooler for a moment.

Once the rain had pitter-pattered away and the wind died down to a lazy breeze, time was fit to head outside and begin the trek to the corner.  Thunderclouds some distance away still lurched and rumbled, and sparse flashes of lightning served as a reminder that some horrors take longer to dissipate.  At least I could keep my umbrella in my purse.

I’d left my glasses there as well.  Sometimes I just don’t wear them.

With an electric sky behind and before me, I could only squint to see your faint outline as I approached a busy corner.  Two five-lane roads met at ninety degree angles, with two pseudo-ways cut through so impatient traffickers could make a right turn on the fly.  The lights went green-yellow-red, green yellow-red, though with obscured vision it was all the same to me.  It looked more like a long orange than a quick transition from yellow to red.

You met me a little more than halfway.  You started walking as soon as you saw me and came into view twenty steps later with a look in your eyes like you wanted nothing more but me in your arms.

That’s what you did.

While sky sprites pounded drums with their fists, and sparks stretched across the night time sky in broken veins, we held on and kissed like we’d been apart for seven weeks and would soon be apart for seven more.

You pulled away and left me breathless, and we continued through the residue of the storm hand-in-hand.
sometimes art imitates life.

Enjoy.
